Community-based ghost fishing gear management

Guardians of the Sea – Gulf of Tribugá

The Gulf of Tribugá supports Afro-descendant coastal communities reliant on fishing and tourism. There, fishing fleets produce plastic-made ghost gear that impacts rocky reefs, mangrove estuaries, and migrant megafauna, and threatens food security.

We are a group of native divers from the Gulf of Tribugá who contribute to the conservation of marine ecosystems through outreach communication and the removal of ghost fishing gear from the seabed, safeguarding the habitats that support our community. Our slogan is “Love for marine life.”
