"Roots of Resilience: Restoring Ghana’s Mangroves for People and Planet"

EMMANUEL NYARKO

Ghana’s mangroves, especially in the Densu Delta and Keta Lagoon, are being destroyed due to overharvesting and coastal development, threatening marine life, climate resilience, and local livelihoods.

This project focuses on the restoration and sustainable management of mangrove ecosystems in the Densu Delta (Greater Accra) and Keta Lagoon Complex (Volta Region). Building on our previous success recognized by the Millennium Ocean Prize in 2021, we will engage local youth and women in planting native mangrove species, conduct educational outreach, and implement community-based monitoring systems. The goal is to enhance carbon sequestration, strengthen coastal resilience, and restore habitat for marine biodiversity.
