Water buffaloes, once vital for agriculture, now play a key role in Hong Kong's wetlands. However, urbanization and human-wildlife conflict have dwindled their population, with management efforts failing to recognize their ecological importance.

The solution consists of three essential steps: Conducting a Survey: Initiate a survey to assess local perceptions and attitudes toward the current presence of water buffaloes. This will help understand community concerns, support, and knowledge gaps about the buffaloes' role in the ecosystem. Research on Ecological Roles: Conduct in-depth research on the ecological functions of water buffaloes, focusing on their role in enhancing carbon sequestration, promoting biodiversity, and maintaining healthy wetlands and marshes. Community Awareness: Develop and implement awareness programs to educate the local community about the significant ecological benefits of water buffaloes. This includes promoting their role in carbon storage, wetland health, and wildlife support, encouraging sustainable coexistence and fostering long-term conservation efforts.
