Posidonia oceanica seagrass restoration

Aquatours Almería Aventuras Submarinas S.L.

Posidonia oceanica is a very important marine plant that forms large meadows which provides numerous benefits and ecosystem services. In fact, this seagrass has been recognised to play a crucial role in Climate Stability, due to actions such as carbon sequ

Posidonia oceanica is a vulnerable species, protected not only in Spain but throughout the entire Mediterranean Sea, and it is also an ecological keystone species. We propose restoring the small areas that have lost their plants due to the action of anchors and nets. During the project, we will delineate and protect the area using four buoys. (So the reason for the damage will be eliminated.) The restoration of bigger areas is not a feasible project, but we will restore areas smaller than 60 x 60 cm where we can detect the previous presence of Posidonia. At the same time, volunteers will assist with the restoration as part of a citizen science project. Our goal is to restore these minor “wounds” with Posidonia plants that have been naturally detached from the meadows by the action of storms and surges. These plants remain alive for several days, allowing divers to pick them while underwater and successfully replant them. With this action, all these non-vegetated gaps within meadows will be covered again with healthy plans, strengthening the meadow, enhancing the resilience of the entire ecosystem and assuring the relevant ecosystem services.
