Plastic Action for Sustainability (PAS)

The stretch of beach opposite the University of Cape Coast in Ghana, is heavily polluted with plastics from sachet and bottle water which students rely on due to poor quality of water. This is compounded by unawareness of the impact of plastic pollution

Plastic Action for Sustainability (PAS) a student led initiative will be created across student societies in each department. This is to take the awareness of plastic pollution beyond Environmental Science Department to the whole school community. Embedding this initiative in student societies will ensure sustainability as students who come to join the department will join in the fight against Plastic pollution. PAS volunteers will begin with room-to-room education in student’s halls of residence to raise awareness about plastic pollution and its impacts on our Oceans this will be dubbed “plastic evangelism”. Students will be taught to segregate water sachet and bottles from other waste. They will also be educated on the impact of plastic waste on our Oceans and the environment at large. Bins for collecting segregated plastic Waste will be provided to collect the generated waste. PAS already has a collaboration with the management of Superannuation Hall, which is a hall of residence with over 1000 student who consume sachet water and bottle water daily. With this collaboration collecting of the waste is done by the cleaners in the hall who hands them over to a recycling company (Clean Ocean Project) which PAS will also be collaborating with. The student community in the University of Cape Coast (UCC) is made up of young people from all over Ghana and parts of Africa. Stirring plastic action amongst these students ensures wider reach and long-term impact as students will carry the message across Ghana and beyond. Also, along the stretch of beach opposite the University of Cape Coast (Ola Beach), there are no bins for waste collection. As a result beach users dump plastic on the beach. PAS will collaborate with resorts along the beach and install bins for plastic collection. The generated waste will be picked up by a recycling company. To ensure good mentorship and continuity, PAS will collaborate with Clean Up Plastics (CUP) an NGO which members of PAS have been joining during beach clean ups and plastic education. PAS needs support to provide special bins for collection of plastic waste and a weighing balance to collect data on the amount of plastic waste generated and to settle other financial cost that may come along with its execution. We believe that plastic education will cause a change in behaviour which will change the approach to plastic consumption and plastic waste management.
