Tanzania is struggling with poor soft plastic waste management, with 96% mismanaged and only 40% collected. Coastal areas like Bagamoyo, Tanga, Unguja, and Pemba are heavily affected. These plastics break down into microplastics, polluting water bodies

A sustainable solution to Tanzania’s plastic pollution crisis is the production of biodegradable shopping bags, file bags, and paper food containers made from seaweed. This eco-friendly alternative reduces the reliance on single-use plastics, lowers carbon emissions, and supports a circular economy through versatile applications. The initiative helps conserve marine biodiversity by minimizing plastic pollution and protecting marine ecosystems. It also aligns with several Sustainable Development Goals, including SDG 12, 13, 14, 8, 9, 15, and 17.
