Marine Conservation Awareness Through Sports and Arts in Shela BMU, Malindi
Blue Resilience CBO
The Shela Beach Management Unit (BMU) in Malindi is a critical hub for marine conservation and sustainable fishing, but it’s facing serious challenges. Illegal fishing, weak enforcement, and dwindling fish stocks are causing tension among local fishers. At
Our project tackles these challenges by using sports and arts to bring people together, raise awareness, and inspire action. We’ll organize football and volleyball tournaments with conservation-themed messages, host mural painting, poetry slams, and theatre performances focused on marine protection, and set up a youth hub where young people can meet, learn, and collaborate. We’ll also train peer educators to lead conservation campaigns and hold regular forums where youth, BMU leaders, and officials can discuss solutions.
