Management of marine ecosystems and the fight against plastics in the Congo Basin in the post-conflict period in the Great Lakes region: Case of Lake Kivu in the DR Congo.

Marcellin KASIKALULU

Lake Kivu, located in North Kivu (Goma) and South Kivu (Bukavu) in the DRC, has become a dumping ground for all sorts of plastic waste mixed with porcelain waste (worms) and human bodies killed during the armed conflict between the DRC government and the A

However, we have implemented concrete collective solutions adapted to local needs to clean up marine ecosystems through sanitation, the collection of plastic waste from the lake, and environmental education on environmental protection and marine ecosystem regeneration. The work is carried out by committed young people, climate rights advocates and protectors of marine ecosystems and the Congo Basin. We offer waste collection sessions and the provision of public trash receptacles to limit the population from dumping waste into the lake, which can have a negative impact on fish reproduction, water pollution, and climate change.
