Digital Junior Ocean Citizens for Ocean Sustainability (Digi-Kids)
Gabriella-Rose Ndah
Plymouth is known as the UK's ocean city, but ocean literacy is still not sufficiently integrated in the culture and academic systems. Interaction with the sea & community actions for ocean conservation are minimal. Most kids are clueless about the ocean.
I am developing a set of digital platforms to advance and accelerate ocean literacy in my school, Plymouth High School for Girls (PHSG), and in schools across Plymouth. These interactive tools, equipped with games and quizzes, aim to serve as educational material to equip my generation and peers with knowledge and awareness of the importance of the ocean, marine challenges, and marine advocacy while learning the basics of marine digital coding and, above all, enjoying fun games together. The first app, entitled 'The Keystonners Curse', is a fun interactive story that addresses the impacts of eliminating keystone marine species. The second, entitled 'Ocean Treaty Explorer: BBNJ Made Fun!', is an educational and gaming app that addresses the BBNJ, offering relevant educational material tailored to kids while equipping them with knowledge of strategies to protect the high seas. These tools also feature options to address poignant messages to policymakers focusing on ocean health and sustainability.
